Miss India Fiji leaves our shores
3-Feb-2009 08:58 AM

FINANCE Pacific’s Miss India Fiji 2009, Naziah Ali and organiser, Ranjit Raju leave for Durban, South Africa today to take part in the Miss India Worldwide pageant to be held on February 14.

Miss India Fiji pageant was held on January 17 at the Khatria Hall where she was declared the winner among 12 other contestants.

Raju said this was a big event for the Indo-Fijian community and for Fiji as a whole as the pageant would provide international market for the nation.

“The Miss India Fiji Pageant provides entertainment and enlightenment about Indo-Fijian arts and culture to the audience; benefits and opportunities for the contestants; and an annual worldwide event for the participation of the Indo-Fijian community,” he said.

“This inaugural event in Fiji created a lot of hype and excitement among people in Fiji and overseas. There were Indo-Fijian contestants from all over Fiji and some even flew in from the US and NZ to take part in the pageant this year.”

The Miss India Fiji organisation is affiliated with the Miss India Worldwide Pageant.

The winner of the Miss India Fiji Pageant will get tremendous media exposure and the opportunity of a lifetime to represent Fiji in the internationally established Miss India Worldwide Pageant to be held in Durban, South Africa on February 14.

“Contestants from over 25 countries are expected to participate in this annual event.”

Bollywood Actress Kareena Kapoor is expected to attend the pageant on February 14.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
