AT LAST ADI SALUSALUBA HOSTEL SET TO OPEN
3-Feb-2010 09:12 AM

Students in the interior as well as those in other parts of the western division will be overjoyed and relieved when they will hear about their grievance being met.

Chairman of the Ba Provincial Council Ratu Meli Saukuru said they have bought a double storey residential house situated on crown land for FD$384,000 and will pull down the partitions to create a dormitory for the girls.

“The initiative came about after they received a request from the students in 2006 asking the Province’s think-tank (a body that advises the Council) to buy a house or a piece of land to build a hostel for the benefit of the students who travel to Suva for tertiary education,” he added.

The request was turned into a proposal and the Council have met and agreed on the proposal.

Moreover they have lodged their request with the Minister of Education Filipe Bole today, and also they will be approaching business houses personally and ask for their assistance.

“They’re part of the province and part of the family, so we will ask them for assistance in a genuine way”.

“This hostel will be able to accommodate 20 girls for starters and as we improve and have more money we will extend the house and be able to accommodate more because the land is almost 2 acres,” Saukuru continued.

Committee for the hostel had a meeting yesterday at 5.00pm.

There are 21 tikina’s in the province of Ba with 107 villages, and a total number 33,000 people in the VKB (Vola Ni Kawa Bula). About 2/3 of the total number are Youths.

WEEKLY POLL
How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
