Ratu Cavuilati to present credentials
6-Feb-2010 03:24 PM

Fiji’s Roving Ambassador and High Commissioner to the Pacific Islands, H.E. Ratu Seremaia Tui Cavuilati, will be presenting his credentials to the President of the Federated States of Micronesia, H.E President Emmanuel Mori on Tuesday 9th February in Palikir, Pohnpei, FSM. The FSM is one of the first few Pacific Island countries to recognize Fiji’s current political situation and the importance of enabling Fiji to resolve its own challenges, a statement that augurs well with the presentation of H.E Cavuilati’s credential with a firm view to further enhance relations between the two countries.

While in the North Pacific, Ambassador Cavuilati will be exploring opportunities that Fiji could capitalize and draw benefit from such as potential sea-food and agro-markets of Fiji’s products, labourers and workers scheme, as well tourism source markets.

A major impetus is the impending military build up in Guam with an estimated 14,000 people to be relocated to Guam from Okinawa, Japan in the near future. The military relocations will induce all sorts of demand from construction to hotel workers triggering other ancillary services that have enormous multiplier effects for Fiji, should Fiji taps on these opportunities successfully. Additionally, with Continental now flying directly to Nadi from Guam twice a week, it has opened untapped markets for Fiji which were otherwise too prohibitive and costly in the past. The time to act is now.

Ambassador Cavuilati will brief the Minister of Foreign Affairs upon his return for an appropriate Cabinet decision.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
