DigiTV launches in the pacific
30-Jul-2009 10:29 AM

Digicel, the fastest- growing mobile operator in the Pacific, on Tuesday launched DigiTV, its new pre-paid television service. DigiTV is the first TV service for the Telecoms company and it will turn on officially tomorrow with a huge party in the Pacific island of Tonga.

The pre-paid DigiTV service is currently offered to Tongatapu and ‘Eua residents offering a choice of two affordable enterainment packages Digifamily and Digimax, along with other great benefits such as high definition picture quality, stereo sound and a brand new content. Up to now residents of Tonga have had to invest heavily in a satellite dish equipment to access international TV programming. DigiTV is a simple cable box plugged in at home and takes less than 5 minutes to install.

With the two new TV packages, DigiTV customers can enjoy brand new mix of International and local content.

The Digifamily costs $65 a monthly with 14 channels to choose from including BBC World, Cartoon Channel, Ten Sports, E! Entertainment. Digimax has a 20 channel package for $99 a month; it has all the Digifamily channels plus six more, NatGeo Adventure, Eurosport, CNN International, Nickelodeon and DigiPremium. The cable box is available on a promotional launch offer for $190 for a 30 day period.

David Butler, CEO of Digicel added, “This is a momentous occasion for Digicel Tonga, as we are the first Digicel country to launch Digitv in the Pacific region. We acquired the TonFon TV business in 2007 and have invested extensively to create a world class television service.  DigiTV is committed to providing an international and local mix of programming to suit everyone in Tonga”.

Digicel acquired the Tonfon TV business in September 2007, since then Digicel has invested over US$2 million in upgrading the system to produce a high definition affordable product for the people in Tonga. This is the first DigiTV service to launch in the region and throughout all the other 31 Digicel countries worldwide.

Excitement has been building for the last year around the re-brand and upgrade of the business. DigiTV will host a fabulous day of activities to celebrate the launch on Thursday 30th July. It will take place beside the Digicel Head Office in the Leiola compound from 7am – 7pm, with a massive screen playing your favourite DigiTV channels all day. There will be face painting, bouncing castles, live entertainment, choir competition, prizes, blockbuster movie and much more. You will see around town the new DigiTV massive billboards and TV ad being aired with music from the famous Tongan artist Dawn Raid. “The objective of the party is to invite everyone in Tonga to come and enjoy the celebration” added Marc Santos, Digi TV manager.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
