Crystal wants to change youth perception
31-Jul-2009 09:16 AM

A beauty contestant wants to change the perception of youths towards charitable work and caring for the elderly.

Twenty-year-old Crystal Lilo is another dazzling contestant for this year’s Sugar Festival which will be staged in Lautoka in September this year.

The airline ticketing programme student at Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji (TPAF) hails from Fiji ’s Hidden Paradise Savasavu.

Currently she is staying in Nadi and is extremely elated to be part of this year’s Sugar Festival beauty pageant.

The soft-spoken lass from the Friendly North revealed that she is very saddened to see lack of interest by the young generation towards charitable work and caring for the senior citizens.

“I really want to change this mindset of the young adults of today who mainly are least bothered to lend a helping hand in such activities.

“I want to encourage more and more young people to assist organisations such as the Sugar Festival to raise money for charity.

“There are many people out there who are struggling immensely to survive and the youths of today can play a pivotal role in eradicating their difficulties.

“If more young people come together then they can make a major difference to the life of many unfortunate and needy ones

“Many of our senior citizens are spending the rest of their lives at places such as the Old People’s Home and need the love and assistance for us young people.”

Meanwhile, Lilo is sponsored by Northern Club and lists her hobbies as paddling, travelling, sleeping and spending time with the family.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
