1-Aug-2009 10:54 AM

Abundance of local resources especially bamboo grow wildly in various parts of Fiji but not utilised or used for commercial pusposes.

The South Pacific Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will conduct a one-day workshop to enhance the people of Fiji and various ministries especially landowners the benefit of using bamboo.

Speaking to Fiji Daily Post Vinesh Prasad from SPC said the theme of the workshop was to add value to bamboo and also to alleviate poverty in Fiji by using natural resource for our advantage and not burn it down.

Prasad also said that the workshop which would be held at the Forestry Department in Colo-i-Suva with 25 participants from various stakeholders would learn to use bamboo and make use of it as their means of income.

Participants at the workshop were picked by the Ministry of Forestry from the assessment done by them in identifying key areas which have resource of bamboos.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday next week starting at 9am and finishing off at 5pm.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
